Unhygienic Kitchen Practices to Avoid

Failure to sanitize your kitchen counter regularly

According to a microbiologist, Dr. Charles Gerba, people failed to clean their kitchen counter regularly, making it more unhygienic than the toilet seat. For thorough sanitation of the kitchen counter, he suggested to use paper towel and disinfectant kitchen cleaner in wiping it down. Throw the paper towel away after using it.

Rinsing but not sanitizing your cutting board

A lot of people use the same cutting board for meats, fruits, and vegetables and unfortunately, they ignore sanitizing these cutting boards. Raw meat on typical cutting board has 200 times more fecal board than a toilet seat. While people only rinse their cutting board, however, poultry and raw meat leave behind campylobacter and salmonella according to Dr. Gerba. To keep cutting boards from germs, he suggested using different cutting boards for meat and vegetables. In addition, he suggested as well sanitizing the board using a kitchen disinfectant or placing it in the dishwasher.

Not changing out your sponge, dishcloth or scrub brush regularly

Every time sponges, dishcloths, and scrub brushes are left wet usually in the sink, they are exposed to more bacterial infestations. The advice from Dr. Gerba is to change dishcloths weekly and put the sponge into the dishwasher or microwave for thirty seconds. By doing this, bacteria will be killed keeping you safe from the illness they bring.

Not sanitizing the bottom of your sink.

According to the director of the University of Arizona’s environmental health sciences, Kelly Reynolds, Ph.D, The bottom of the sink is the filthiest area in the kitchen but people forget it often. A slimy film infested by many bacteria inhibits cracks or splits in around the sink because of the habit of rinsing raw meat. Moreover, the sink is an ideal place for the growth of E. coli because it’s wet and moist.

Vinegar and lemon can kill several bacteria though not all. A stronger bacterial killer could be a disinfectant spray. You can also fill your sink with the mixture of water and bleach weekly. Look for some of these disinfectants in any plumbing shop in Australia

Steps in sanitizing your kitchen sink

The kitchen is one of the most utilised rooms in the house. For an entire day, a common sink handles messy dishes, leftovers, and standing rinsing water. These everyday chores cause waste to accumulate inside and on the sink leading to stains and odour, making it a community for germs.

In order to get rid of these problems and avoid the danger they pose to you and to your family, learning how to properly clean a kitchen sink well will resolve the dirty issue.

  • Get rid of all dirty dishes and food leftover from your sink first before you start scrubbing your sink.
  • Wash down the sink’s whole surface with the use of soft cloth, gentle soap and warm water to sanitize the taps, the drain as well as the outer rim. Do this cleaning every after use of the sink.
  • Pour boiling hot plain water into the drain to help eliminate any foul odours and soften hard and sticky materials that are clogged in the drain. Make sure to wash down the whole sink with this process. Do the same process a number of times every week.
  • Pour 1 tsp. of baking soda and a quarter cup of lemon juice over the sink’s surface and down the drain weekly. Allow the mixture to stand for about 10 minutes and use hot water to rinse away the remaining residue.
  • Mix together a half cup of baking soda, a quarter cup of lemon juice, and directly pour the solution into the sink drain. When the mixture is in the drain, pour down a half cup of white vinegar. Use the mixture of these ingredients every week to loosen and remove clogs and clean the drain. You can find these ingredients in most supermarkets.

You can find most of the degree in and around the stopper. Clean the area using a small wire brush.

Risks of Having a Flooded Basement

Basement areas are a great additional and useable space in any home. Apart from the additional space many homes have this area as the centre of their plumbing installations. It keeps unsightly pipes and equipment out of sight and the extra space is ideal to use for creating work or entertainment areas.

basementThere are some things to keep in mind in keeping these areas safe and hygienic at all times. Mold is possibly the biggest danger that is lurking in an area susceptible to mold growth. Mold can cause a variety of health related problems if not treated and kept at bay. Apart from growing in carpets, drywalls and ceilings it will present health hazards to the occupants of the home. Most of these areas are hidden from view and only plumbers trained and experienced in this area will be able to detect wet areas.

You Plumbing experts warn our clients against contracting eye irritations, skin rashes and coughing. Mold is further a danger that can cause memory loss and in extreme cases even brain damage. Having us do regular inspections before any of these problems occur is highly recommended.

Flooding although not as bad for the health is another concern that must be avoided. Cleaning up after having a flood is both time consuming and costly. Having the experts check the installation at regular intervals can eliminate this completely.

A flooding does not only mean mopping and drying the area. Water seeps into the walls, cavities and the floor. These potential problems will only appear and become visible long after the flooding. Prevention is the logical solution to make your basement safe and flood free.

You Plumbing offers assistance in the Sydney area on a 24/7 basis and we will gladly inspect and recommend preventive measures before you are faced with a flooded basement area and the eventual growth of deadly mold.

Get Rid of Molds: Effective Tips to Avoid Moisture Inside Your House

Mold can be unhealthy and damaging when it grows undetected in your home. It can grow anywhere such as carpet, clothing, and even in those places, you can’t see the backside of drywall and above ceiling tiles. In order to prevent mold, you have to control the moisture in your house. Before it becomes a bigger problem in your house, it is best to prevent it.

Check out the following ways to avoid moisture indoors, as well as the mold that thrives on it:

Correct the problem areas in your house

While it’s almost impossible to mold-proof your home, the best you can do is to make it mold-resistant. So, conduct an audit of your home and identify those problem areas. Try to check if the basement floods or if there’s a frequent condensation on an upstairs window. You can install mold-resistant products or repair the damaged gutters.

Dry the wet areas immediately

Address those wet areas immediately. Take note that mold can’t grow without moisture. Dry right away the leakage into the basement after a heavy rainfall, accumulation of water from a leaky pipe, and even a spill on the carpet within a day or two. If your house has experienced a flood, remove those water-damaged carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can’t be completely dried.

Opt for mold-resistant products for your home

moldsWhether you are building a new home or doing a renovation, opt for mold-resistant products such as mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock. You can also choose mold inhibitors for paints. Those areas in your house which are prone to wetness, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and kitchens, moisture-resistant drywall helps a lot.

Have proper ventilation to prevent moisture

Ensure that your daily activities such as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a laundry does not incite mold by having proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.

Track the humidity inside your house

It is recommended by the EPA that the indoor humidity should be between 30 and 60 percent. Try to have a moisture meter which is available in your local store in order to measure humidity.

When talking about the molds, it is very important to ensure that your plumbing system is in great working condition and doesn’t leak. Leakage can be a great source of molds. So, make sure that your pipes are in good condition through proper maintenance. Work with the best plumbing services in Sydney for reliable plumbing fixtures. How is the kitchen work triangle used in Kitchen designs?

Kitchen work Triangle is a term not often understood by homeowners. This method has been used since the early 1940s by kitchen designers to design functional kitchens for their clients. The You Plumbing team has clarified this term by offering the following explanation on how it is applied to create a functional kitchen design.

kitchenThe three main working areas in the kitchen that must be within easy reach of the cook is the sink, stove and the refrigerator. They must be placed in a way to eliminate unnecessary walking between them while preparing food. The main aim is not the shape of the triangle but rather the distance between the 3 points. The following distance is a guideline to consider. Any 2 points should be within the range of 1.2 to 2.7 meters and the combined length of the 3 legs between 4 and 8 meters. Less than this means it could feel cramped and more means too much travel between the points.

From our experience as your bespoke plumbing shop in Australia we realize that the kitchen concept has changed over the years and in the modern Australian kitchen more than one family member may be involved in food preparation. Thus space could be a problem with more movement. Placing an island in the middle is a practical solution to resolve this with seating outside the triangle.

You Plumbing also suggest that creating a second triangle in the kitchen could be used with the oven as a point in the triangle. This is used when the oven and cook top cannot be placed together.

When doing the kitchen design we advise that you visualize how the design will suit your needs. Questions such as: how much traffic will be in the triangle? Can 2 people work in the kitchen? There are many other questions to make this as functional as possible for your specific needs.

You Plumbing, your plumbing services in Sydney, also point out that in some home designs and layouts this triangle may have to be adapted to suit the floor plan. Long narrow kitchens may need to have a second sink area to remain functional. For best planning advice contact our team to assist in planning this very important area of your home.

Laundry Room Design Ideas

Many homes have this tiny cluttered room in their homes they refer to as their laundry. No matter how hard we try to keep ontop of our washing , this room rarely seems to be neat and tidy. At You Plumbing, we know this can be frustrating, so we have come up with some ideas to beautify and organise your laundry.

imagesStart by installing a good lighting system to brighten the room up. If the room has windows, open them up to allow light and fresh air into the space. Remove clutter from the room and use clothes baskets with a lid to change the appearance drastically. Having dirty laundry all over the surfaces and floors makes the room look and feel grimy.

Install some cabinets to store cleaning materials as well as providing space for freshly cleaned clothing. Neatly hung or stacked clothing will give the area a neat and tidy appearance. Using cabinets also allows for better control of items needed to do the laundry. These cabinets could hold further house items such as:

  • Detergents.
  • Laundry shampoos.
  • Starch.
  • Sewing Kits.
  • Brooms
  • Mops
  • Extra linen

Another great idea is installing a wall mounted ironing board. This means folding it against the wall once the unit is used. This is ideal in laundry rooms that are smaller than usual. In many modern homes this could be a space not much bigger than a fair size closet.

To complete the project the home owner can be creative and decorate the room in a way that reflects their own unique personality. Flowers, pictures and paint can change this from a messy area into a fresh area where people can enjoy the task at hand. Music piped or installed is another idea that can change the ambiance of this essential and often used area into something pleasant and alive.

Top Kitchen Design Themes You May Want to Consider

Kitchens are considered by many as the heart of the home. This is why people really try to make not only a functional space but a beautiful space as well. However, there are a number of reasons why some design themes are more preferred than others. These might include cost-effectiveness, which can easily be enhanced over time and its aesthetic appeal to prospective buyers.

Check out the top kitchen design themes that you might want to try:

All-white kitchen

An all-white kitchen is still trendy these days. White kitchens look crisp, clean, fresh, and easy to build upon. In addition to that, you can also add white fixtures, fittings, cabinetry, and other kitchen elements easily. But if you want to add some color, try to add a statement chandelier or bright appliances and dinnerware.

Industrial theme

Another option is the industrial-themed kitchen, which looks rustic, raw, earthy, and workable. Some of the elements you might want to consider are chrome pipes and taps, an exposed brick wall behind wooden shelves, stainless steel cabinetry, and bronze knobs.

Consider bright colours

Meanwhile, you might also want to consider bright colors if you don’t prefer white. For instance, you may choose colour pops such as red splashbacks or blue cabinets. However, see to it that the colors complement rather than contrast. Make sure that they adhere to a neutral scheme for the rest of the space.

Add life to a white kitchen

If you want to add a little life to the clean lines of a white kitchen, try to inject a light wood. Examples of this are painted white cabinets, timber floors, brick walls, and a timber-top island bench.

After considering the aesthetic elements of the kitchen, it is also important to ensure that your plumbing system is fully functional. How to remodel your house for less

Sometimes It is wiser to remodel an existing house than build a new one. Aside from being cost-efficient, it can also take less time than a full rebuild. So before buying a house always inquire about the property’s foundation and lot coverage. After you’ve cleared this out with your agent, decide on one spectacular change you can do to the house that will make it feel like your own. One thing you can do if you have the budget for it is to open up a ceiling.

Invest in insulated walls, ceilings, and windows which will help you save money on heating and cooling and can also soundproof your house. When it comes to your windows make sure that they are of the same size. To increase natural light, you can enlarge them.

The next thing to consider is the plumbing location if you want help on this you can visit our website at http://www.youplumbing.com.au. Plumbing location may vary from area to area so it is best to consult a plumber or plumbing services to do the changes you want, done on the house’s plumbing.

For your storage, you can opt for custom-built cabinets or buy pre-fabricated ones. When it comes to your countertops, always remember resale. Don’t spend too much on it, you can still have the effect that you want with a variety of cheaper options. You don’t have to splurge when you can find a viable alternative.

3240119298_7d2bf9c432_bIdeally, it is best to settle with mid-priced, great-looking appliances. After all, appliances are standard sizes so start with what your budget will permit then upgrade when you can. In the same way, when it comes to the rooms in your house especially the bathroom and kitchen make sure to keep standard measurements for the time being. THink about how you can utilize décor to make rooms more aesthetically appealing without spending too much money.

Lastly utilize lighting and colours to give your house a boost. Determine what activities you do in each part of your house so you can adjust the lighting and color of the paint in order to achieve the mood that you want those rooms to exude.

What makes a house truly appealing is not the amount of money you spend on it but how you utilise available resources in order to create an ambiance that will complement your family’s personality. You can also upgrade when you can afford it. If you have any plumbing needs feel free to visit our website at http://www.youplumbing.com.au or e-mail us at info@youplumbing.com.au. How to Diagnose and Solve Plumbing Noises

Plumbing Noises can be caused by air hammer or water hammer. If noise is a result of air hammer, air might be trapped and compressed in the pocket or pockets of your water pipes and happens whenever you turn on a faucet or valve.  As you turn on the water valve will release the pressure which causes the loud hammering sound like an air pressure that an air gun releases.

Water hammer, on the other hand happens when water is suddenly shut off and usually starts with a loud sound followed by a series of hammering sounds. The sudden shut causes a rush of water to crash into the faucet valve which will cause the initial loud sound. As this occurs an air cavity and vacuum is formed down in the water pipes which repeatedly surges the water forward until the gradual diminishing of the air pressure.off

Air hammer can be prevented by turning off the water at the mains and draining all the water from the pipes before turning the water back on. This may also be able to address water hammer related noises or you may opt to turn off your faucet slowly to prevent water from rushing against the valves of the water pipes.

These plumbing noises can be very annoying and might keep you up all night. If you live in an old house you can prevent these noises by reducing water pressure or better yet choose to install chambers into your water pipes. Because if left unchecked this might result to a busted pipe which will be a bigger and more expensive problem on your part.  But if you have modern plumbing systems and still have water hammer problems, the air chambers might just be clogged with mineral deposits. A plumber can clean these air chambers so you won’t have to continually remind everyone in your family to slowly close the tap whenever a water hammer occurs.

If you are being bothered by constant plumbing noises you can consult us through our website http://www.youplumbing.com.au or e-mail us at  info@youplumbing.com.au.
